2018 Porsche Macan GTS

2018 Porsche Macan GTS
The Porsche Macan GTS. Arguable the ‘sweet spot’ in the Macan range. Find out why I agree – owners review!

I had my eye on a Porsche Macan for a while, I even had a brand new Macan S on order back in 2017 but decided to go for a different car instead. That decision stuck with me for a good 18 months and every time I saw a Macan S on the road I wondered, did I make the right decision? Fast forward to 2019 and I found myself back in the Porsche showroom, this time looking at the new facelift Macan S.

Once again, I was close to confirming the order but something was telling me no. I had a thorough test drive but I felt that something was missing, there wasn’t a raw feel to the facelift version that I had felt in the 2017 Macan S. After doing some research, someone recommended that I take a serious look at the Macan GTS (pre-facelift as this wasn’t announced at the time). I did some hunting and found a very well spec’d Macan GTS at an independent dealership close by.

I arrived at the dealership with excitement and interest as to what the Macan GTS would offer. Let me say it right here, as soon as I started the car up and heard that iconic roar, I was pretty much sold. Then within 5 minutes of the test drive I knew that I was going to buy this car. The rawness, the handling, the interior black and red contrast, everything about the car checked every box. This car had soul and the personality to match!

After living with the car did it live up to expectations? Getting straight to the point, yes it did!

The performance of the Macan GTS is mind blowing. A car that big should not be able to do what it does. It just defies everything. You really do feel like you are in a sports car at all times. The handling is typical Porsche and the constant roar and feedback that you get from the engine keeps you engaged at all times. In a straight line it feels quick, especially if you launch it, you get off the line right away with little lag. Where it really comes to life is going round corners, you feel stuck to the road and do not lose power throughout the gears. A lot of drivers tried to race me off the lights and was left disappointed, put any driver in the Macan GTS and you’ll get one hell of a ride!

My Macan GTS had the GTS leather pack which meant that the seats were all leather. The seats were very comfortable and you could just sink into them and cruise easily around town and on the motorways. You could adapt the suspension to be in comfort mode for a smooth ride. I never had any complaints from passengers either and many said it was the most comfortable car of mine that they had been in!

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the Macan GTS was very true to Porsche. With many components that could be recognised on the iconic 911. The angles of the car were aggressive and the version I had ‘murdered out’ looked menacing on the road. In terms of SUV’s, I may be biased, but it was the best looking one out there.

Interior Design

The Macan GTS interior design was special. The black and red contrast made the car feel that extra bit sporty and then having ‘GTS’ stiched in red into the headrests was the icing on the cake. I also had the carbon fibre interior pack which meant there was carbon fibre on the doors, steering wheel and around the centre console. I also had alcantara roof lining which made the cabin feel even more luxurious. I must say, sitting in the cabin was a very special place to be.

This is the only area that lets the Macan GTS down. For a 2018 vehicle I was expecting more in terms of tech. There was no heads up display, modern centre console and the sat nav was terrible to say the least. Some people complain about the dashboard still being analogue however, I really liked this as it was traditional Porsche with the big rev counter in the middle and then the digital section on the side.

To be honest, a performance SUV will never be economical. I visited the petrol station so many times they knew me on a first name basis. It doesn’t matter how sensible and economical you set out to drive this car, as soon as the engine roars you find yourself in sports mode giving the car (and you) what it really wants! Running costs are quite high too, don’t expect to get sensible bills back from Porsche for any work that needs to be done! One thing I say to anyone buying a Porsche – make sure it has a Porsche Warranty and if it doesn’t – get one!

For me, this car ticks pretty much every box for a performance SUV. If you want something with great performance and soul (pre-facelift) then the Macan GTS is for you. It looks great and feels great to be in – which is the foundation for any car that you own. You also don’t get bored of looking at it sat in your driveway either!
